Punters get shirty in memory of celebrated world cup footballer Bobby Moore

Fundraisers at the White Horse will get their favourite shirts on to raise money for the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK as part of the 50 year celebrations since England won the world cup.

Tomorrow (Friday) ‘Football Shirt Friday’ is hoping to raise further funds by getting people to wear their team’s colours for the day or evening and donate £2.

Landlady Margaret Elcock is encouraging visitors to visit the pub wearing their shirts.

“It should be great fun and I’m hoping lots of people get involved and raise funds,” she said.

Many of the regulars at the White Horse will be wearing their shirts including those of Newcastle United, Northampton Town, Milton Keynes Dons and Walsall.

On Saturday, July 30, it will have been 50 years since England captain Bobby Moore collected the Jules Rimet Trophy from Queen Elizabeth II at the old Wembley Stadium.

In 1991 Moore underwent an emergency operation for suspected colon cancer and in 1993, he announced he was suffering from bowel and liver cancer by which time the cancer had spread.

In February 1991 he commentated on an England match against San Marino at Wembley.

That was to be his final public appearance and seven days later he died at the age of just 51.

The Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK was set up by Stephanie Moore MBE, Bobby’s widow, in his memory to fund pioneering, life-saving bowel cancer research.
