The district will welcome

Fiori Musicali, one of the main providers of baroque and classical music concerts outside London, this September at Nicholas Church, Eydon.

On September 23, at 7.30pm, the church will be brought to life by Fiori Musicali choir for one evening only.

Fiori’s director - local resident Penelope Rapson - will direct the choir in another of their popular village concerts, this time featuring music by Elizabethan composer William Byrd.

Fiori will be bringing alive atmospheric 16th-century Catholic choral music.

Byrd’s music was first composed for a secret performance because Catholic church music was strictly forbidden during Queen Elizabeths I’s reign.

For this reason it has often been described as ‘illicit’ but can be heard in the church on performance night.

Joining the choir on this occasion will be baroque cello star Kinga Gáborjáni from Hungary.

Kinga, who plays with The English Concert, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and other well known period-instrument ensembles, will be performing sublime masterpieces for unaccompanied cello by JS Bach.

The setting for this unique performance has been well chosen as the church at Eydon is tucked away and is very atmospheric.

Penelope said: “Performing in such a beautiful church as St Nicholas is just ideal for the kind of music Fiori do.

“We shall be taking people back to the sound-world of an earlier age – enjoying the magical atmosphere of this special village church.”

This is just one of Fiori’s many popular concerts this season - a season that sees them performing around 15 concerts in central England and abroad.

Though the night promises to be a special one, organisers suggest bringing cushions for extra comfort.

The concert is given by kind permission of the Church wardens and parochial church council and tickets are selling fast.
