A MAJOR campaign has been launched to force the Government to scrap VAT on fuel for the air ambulance.
The life-saving service is funded entirely through charitable donations, and has saved successive Governments millions of pounds.
Now an e-petition has been set up, backed by East Midlands MEP Derek Clark, to exempt the service from VAT on fuel, in the same way the lifeboat service has been exempt since 1977.
Once the petition hits 100,000 signatures, the Government is duty bound to debate it.
Mr Clark said: “The service is a life-saver – it is vitally important and is a magnificent, volunteer-funded service. I call on as many people as possible to sign the petition – it’s growing in numbers minute-by-minute.
“It is only fair and reasonable for the Air Ambulance service to be exempt from VAT and we can force this change.”
