Adopt a pillar and add your name to church campaign

PEOPLE in Daventry are being urged to ‘adopt a pillar’ as part of the fundraising effort to save the Holy Cross Church.

The church needs to raise £129,000 this year to complete urgent repair work and save it from the threat of closure.

English Heritage has put the church on its ‘at risk’ list and offered a major grant of £197,000.

But that is dependant on the church raising the rest of the cash to complete the £320,000 project.

The main problem is the upper level stonework and balustrading at the church have become badly weathered which is becoming more and more of a hazard.

Secretary of the Daventry Holy Cross Building Fund Steve Challen said: “Holy Cross has approximately 250 stone balusters that need either replacement or repair on the roof.

“A programme of adoption is being established and we will be asking £100 for the larger balusters and £50 for the smaller ones.

“An adoption certificate will be issued for each and a book of dedication will be held in the church.”

Talking about other plans the church has to raise funds, Mr Challen added: “A number of recycling initiatives are also being established, including used ink cartridges and old CDs in readiness.

“We will be seeking to position recycling boxes within the church and perhaps local schools and businesses if possible.

“Cannon Michael will be writing personally to almost 200 of the largest companies in the Daventry area seeking corporate donations and members of the Daventry Business Partnership will also be written to seeking their support financially.

“Also 8,000 fundraising awareness leaflets will be dropped to Daventry households by members of the congregation providing further details of how to make a donation.

“And Cannon Michael is in the process of approaching the appropriate regional and national charities for financial support.”

The church has also set up a just giving page where people can log online and donate. To do this visit www.just giving.com/DaventryHoly CrossBuildingFund
