A NEW social group for people with sight difficulties is being set up by a Daventry man.
Steven Smith, who lives in The Stour on the Grange estate, lost his sight through diabetes last summer.
He is now looking to help younger people with sight problems in the town.
He said: “There is a group in Daventry for elderly people who are blind. I’m 47 and there is nothing out there for my age group and younger. For young people especially, there is nothing for them.
“I am looking to initially start some sort of social club and then look to see if we can do other things.
“It can be very intimidating for blind people to go out socially so hopefully this will be a way of getting people out and about.”
The group’s first meeting is planned for July 29 at the Dun Cow pub in Sheaf Street, Daventry, at 7pm. It will take place in a room inside the pub and there will be a waiting service.
Mr Smith added: “I don’t know what sort of reaction I am going to get, there could be three people turn up, there could be 20 or 30 but the more people that come along, the better.
“I am not the sort of person to lie down and do nothing, I like being active and hope to be able to give something back. If we get people coming along, we might be able to trade ideas.”
Anyone who wants more information or is interested in joining the group can call Mr Smith on 01327 876797.
