A NEW taxi rank for hackney carriages in the town centre could be approved tonight (Thursday).
Daventry District Council (DDC) has received an application from the local taxi community for a new stand next to Waitrose in New Street, opposite the bus station.

The proposal will be discussed at a meeting of DDC’s licensing committee and has been recommended for approval by officers.

In his report Tony Gillet, corporate manager for environmental protection at DDC, said: “On balance, the appointment of the lay-by in question will provide an increase in accessibility to taxis in a high-demand area of the town centre to all members of the community including the elderly and disabled.”

There have been several objections to the plans over fears the area is already heavily congested. However the report states the stand would be useful at weekends for clearing the town quickly, cutting antisocial behaviour.
