THE much-anticipated application for a £50m retail and leisure development in Daventry town centre has just been submitted.
Work on the scheme is set to get underway in 2014 and will result in a new shopping area with a cinema and cafes built on the car park behind shops and the current library site north of the High Street (pictured).
It also includes a new library to be built on the Chapel Lane car park near the Moot Hall, and plans for a new supermarket, petrol station and larger retail unit on the site of the old outdoor pool and Ashby Road/Braunston Road roundabout.
Cllr Chris Over, DDC’s economic, regeneration and employment portfolio holder, said: “It’s great news that these planning applications have been submitted. If the proposals are approved by the planning committee, they will not only increase the retail and leisure opportunities on offer, but also significantly boost employment and bring inward investment into the town.
“Following on from the success of the Abbey Retail Park, iCon building and the University Technical College, this is the next significant stepping stone in the renewal of Daventry and demonstrates the Council’s commitment to delivering the vision for regenerating the town centre.
“The details of these applications have been shaped by Henry Boot following the public consultation earlier this year and the planning process will provide a further opportunity for residents to give their feedback on the two schemes.”
Developer Henry Boot had initially planned to put in its application several years ago, but the economic situation had led to some delays.
As the application was handed to Daventry District Council just before the Daventry Express went to press not many details have been released as yet. However, next week’s Daventry Express will carry a full spread on the plans and more details on what can be expected.
