THE stage adaptation of a film classic will be coming to Milton Keynes next week.
Steel Magnolias, based on the movie of the same name starring Julia Roberts and Dolly Parton, runs from Monday to Saturday, June 16. The new version features former Coronation Street star Denise Welch and Strictly Come Dancing contestant Cherie Lunghi.
With the tagline of ‘the funniest play to make you cry,’ Cherie said its the depth of the play which appealed to her when taking the role.
She said: “My character has just lost her husband at the start of the show, so I am very upset, but I find the value of having the friendship in the girls.
“It is actually a very funny show.”
While she liked the film, Cherie decided not to watch the movie after getting the part.
She added: “I had seen the movie and indeed it is one of my daughter’s favourite films so I was aware of it.
“However when I got this part, I didn’t want to watch it because I didn’t want to copy it and do the same performance. I wanted to perform it
without being influenced.”
She was full of praise for Milton Keynes Theatre, a venue which she has performed at before.
Cherie said: “I appeared there last year when I was in The Syndicate with Ian McKellen which was a lovely show.
“It is a fantastic venue and very much looking forward to bringing the tour to the theatre.”
Performances take place at 7.30pm each evening with a matinee starting at 2.30pm on Wednesday and Saturday.
Tickets for the show cost between £11 and £28 and they can be booked by calling the box office on 0844 871 7652 or visit www.atgtickets.com/milton-keynes-theatre.
