Comedic opera fun for family on stage

ONE of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most famous operas will be staged at Royal and Derngate in Northampton next week.

The Northampton Gilbert and Sullivan Group’s performance of Iolanthe starts on Monday with performances running until Saturday, January 26.

It contains some of Gilbert’s wittiest words and some of Sullivan’s most memorable music and just like some present-day commentators as it pokes fun at the British political system as a result of the House of Peers doing battle against a troupe of immortal fairies.

It is a popular show and a firm favourite with audiences as it has something for everyone and appeals to all ages.

It is 60 years this year since an advertisement was placed in a newspaper looking for people to perform savoy operas.

From there the group grew and has now presented all of the works in Gilbert and Sullivan’s repertoire at least once.

For this new production, the group is being put through its paces by director Tim Hurst-Brown and musical director David Chambers and is set to be a delightful evening of music, dance and comedy for all the family.

Performances are at 7.45pm each night with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.

Tickets cost between £17.50 and £20 for Iolanthe and can be bought from the Northampton theatre’s box office on 01604 24811 or alternatively visit www.royalandderngate.co.uk
