A VILLAGE is campaigning for people to start using reusable bags in a bid to help the environment.
Pupils at Weedon Bec Primary School have this week shown their support by joining forces with councillors.
Weedon Bec Parish Council originally launched the campaign, which is aiming to encourage traders in the village to no longer provide plastic carrier bags for shoppers.
The original idea was to reduce the amount of plastic bags in the run up to Christmas, when usage is particularly high.
The initiative is now also being supported by Daventry District Council, which provided pupils from the school with cotton bags so they could help lend their support to the campaign.
The pupils have now created unique designs on their bags which they will take with them when they shop.
Weedon Bec Primary School headteacher Antony Witheyman said: “The children have really enjoyed being part of a village-wide initiative.
“Our eco club have really taken this idea on board and spread the message to the whole school and wider community.”
Councillors are now hoping shops in the village will follow suit and ask customers to bring along their own bags.
Cllr Daniel Cribbin, portfolio holder for the environment at Daventry District Council, said: “The pupils have worked really hard on their designs and the school has been really helpful in getting behind this campaign.
“Research shows that the average person will accept around 300 plastic carrier bags a year.
“Most of them are largely only being used for just a few minutes before ending up in landfill.
“Some traders are already using paper bags and others are interested in finding out about suitable alternatives to plastic.
“I would like to encourage more shopkeepers to source alternatives to plastic carrier bags where possible.
“I would also like them to ask if customers really need bags at all for their purchases.”
