Daventry will be getting a newly refurbished skate park following the green light from councillors.

At a meeting of Daventry District Council’s planning committee held on Wednesday last week, councillors voted to approve planning permission for the skate park.

It will take the place of the currently existing skate park at the New Street Recreation Ground which consists of just two ramps. The park will be for the use of skateboarders as well as BMX and scooter riders and skaters, and will be larger than the existing skate ramps.

DDCs portfolio holder for community, culture and leisure, Cllr Alan Hills, said: “It’s great news that work on the new skate park can now go ahead.

“DDC held a consultation last year asking young people what facilities they wanted to have in the area.

“We had more than 1,500 replies and an improved skate park was one of the top choices, so I hope that they will be very happy with the final design when it opens in the summer.”

The £135,000 scheme has been funded by Daventry District Council with grants from SITA, Money for Youth, Daventry and District Housing and the Daventry District and South Northamptonshire Community Safety Partnership.

Work on the new skate park is expected to start at the end of April and should be completed in July.

Daventry resident Richie McCoy, who has campaigned for this, welcomed the decision. He said: “I think it is a great idea. It is something that we have wanted for a long time. This can only be a good thing for the community and will help to bring people together.”
