A NEW farm shop that hopes to offer a real alternative to the supermarkets is opening just outside Staverton.
Skylark Fields Farm Shop opens on Saturday, attached to a farm on the outskirts of the village off the A425 to Southam.

Samantha and David Thomas bought the farm two years ago when it already had planning permission for a shop.

Now the couple are ready to open their doors, selling their own eggs and chicken, locally sourced meat, potatoes and bread, along with British fruit and veg and some of the essentials like coffee, tea and other cooking ingredients.

Mrs Thomas said: “We sell free range eggs to Sainsbury’s, and we sold them here to the public as well, but we want to expand.

“We’re getting in chickens for meat, and we will have locally baked bread and local potatoes.

“We also have Gloucester old spot pigs, which in my opinion are the best tasting pork. Closer to Christmas we’ll be getting in quality trees and of course turkeys.

“In the future we’re hoping to start growing our own vegetables, I do already have a small orchard with pears and other fruit.

“We also hope to get an ordering and delivery service going in the future, but at the moment we’re just making a start.

“Our local villages are Hellidon, Catesby and Staverton, and I know that if I wake up on a Saturday morning and there’s no butter in the fridge I don’t want to have to go all the way into Daventry to get some.

“So as well as the local and British produce, we’ll be keeping a small range of things like tea, coffee, and bananas to make it into a real convenience shop for local people.”

Mr Thomas has a family background in farming and his and his wife’s young children are also likely to get involved on the farm making it a real family affair.
