More controversy rears its head
Well another week goes by and more controversy rears its head.
Last week it was simulation or diving, this week it’s all about hand ball. Yes I agree that the officials are the custodians of the laws and as such have a duty to see that they are upheld but surely the players and managers have a part to play in this too?
Win at all costs is the message that is coming over loud and clear. And if that is the case then the fans, media and others will just have to take it on the chin when something which circumvents the laws happens to the detriment of their team or country, because you can bet your bottom dollar that next week they will be the ones who benefit from such an act.
The clamour for more technology rolls on and will inevitable be introduced, hopefully without disrupting the natural flow of the game.
For me it means trial by TV, yet TV doesn't provide you with the pressures, pace, tensions that are around on the pitch. Yes it’s easy to see something that is missed in the comfort of an arm chair or standing with a beer in your hand in the pub, but remember I have one chance, one angle, and one second to make a decision.
The good thing that has come out of a traumatic week or so for me is the support of colleagues and friends who rally round and try to see the issues from an official's point of view.
One of the spin offs for me was to receive a box of Walnut Whips from my good friend Ann as a little 'pick me up'. They were that good that the diet has gone out the window!
But seriously, the game at the highest level has become a big industry and we all know that big industries look to maximum profits.
Football is no exception and sometimes laws will be broken to achieve this.
